Matlovich testified in his own defense. "I didn't realize I was gay until about two years ago," he said. And when he did realize the truth, he said, “I cried a lot."
As time went on, he told the board, he realized he always would be homosexual and that he couldn't go on "living a lie" and fearing he would be found out.
